The Cabinet has approved extra funding and other measures to respond to the country's flood crisis.

Insurance Companies are to be called in next week to discuss assisting homeowners who didn't have cover.

The total number expected to be spent on repairing roadways damaged by flooding has been estimated at €60 million, but the final figure has yet to be announced.

A hardship programme will be implemented for farmers who have been the worst affected.

Our political correspondent, Páraic Gallagher reports:

Earlier this afternoon, the setup of a Flood Management Coordination and Implementation Group was among the matters being discussed at a crisis summit at Government Buildings.

Meanwhile, there is a warning that flash flooding on many roads in the North East of the country can be expected over the next 24 hours.
