A man has died after he was struck by a car in County Carlow overnight.

Gardaí said the man - aged in his 40s - was fatally injured after he was struck by an SUV while walking on the Castledermot Road in Tullow at around 4.30am.

The driver of the SUV was uninjured.

The Thomas Traynor Road to Rathbawn Lane is currently closed, with a forensic investigation underway.

Diversions are in place and gardaí are asking the public to use alternative routes.

Anyone who witnesses the collision is urged to contact gardaí at Carlow Garda Station.
