Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to a hit and run incident in Longford yesterday.

A pedestrian in his 20s suffered serious head injuries after he was hit by a silver Ford Transit at Main Street, Edgeworthstown at 2:30am.

Gardaí said the van failed to remain at the scene.

The man was taken to the Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar before being transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, where he remains in a critical condition.

Investigators have set up an incident room at Granard Garda Station and are trying to trace the movements of the van both before and after the crash.
