Gerry Adams to outline "future intentions" for Sinn Féin leadership

The Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams will outline his plans to step down after the party's Ard Fheis in November.

Mr Adams was speaking at a pre-Dáil think-in, in which he said the party wants to be in government in both the Republic and Northern Ireland.

He has previously said he wants to lead Sinn Féin into the next election, but has revealed a 10-year plan for the party - including his own future intentions.

Pat Hickey's trial in Brazil to begin in November

Former Olympic Council of Ireland President Pat Hickey's trial for alleged ticket touting will begin in Rio in November.

In a statement published by the trial judge Guilherme Schilling Duarte on the courts system in recent days, he says there is just cause to proceed with the criminal trial.

Powerful Hurricane Irma heads towards Caribbean islands

Hurricane Irma, which is heading towards the Caribbean and southern United States, could bring winds of 185mph (300km/h).

The US National Hurricane Centre said Irma was "potentially catastrophic" and tweeted that it was "the strongest hurricane in the Atlantic (Ocean) outside the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico in NHC records".

Trump administration to wind down 'Dreamers' scheme for young undocumented immigrants

Barack Obama has described the Trump administration's decision to end the so-called 'Dreamers' programme for young undocumented immigrants in the US as "cruel".

The scheme - called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) - was introduced by the Obama administration in 2012.

It protects around 800,000 people who entered the US illegally as children from deportation for a renewable two-year period, while allowing them to work. 

Call for "extensive" fire safety audit of all recently built properties

Firefighters are calling for an extensive fire risk audit of recently built public and residential properties.

It follows the discovery of deficiencies in safety standards at several schools.

SIPTU full-time and retained firefighter representatives say the fire risk audit is "urgent".
