A cricket match in the UK has been suspended after an 'arrow or crossbow bolt' apparently landed on the field.

The incident happened during a match at The Oval ground in London.

The projectile is said to have appeared at around 4.25pm, during the final day of a Surrey v Middlesex match.

The Guardian reports it landed close to Surrey fielder Ollie Pope.

After the arrow was spotted umpires urged players to leave the field, while Met Police says the ground was evacuated.

Nobody is believed to have been injured, and armed police are reported to be at the scene.

In a statement, police said: "At this early stage it is believed that the object came from outside of the ground. There have been no arrests.

"We retain an open mind as to motive."
