Staff at RTÉ are calling on management to publish details of its pay grades.

It comes amid calls for the State broadcaster to follow the lead of the BBC in revealing its salaries.

A release of documents showed a sizeable gap in the earnings of the BBC's well-known male and female presenters.

Top female personalities at the BBC - including Irish journalist Orla Guerin - have written to its Director-General Tony Hall calling on him to act to tackle the divide.

Now RTÉ staff members want clarity on the issue.

Members of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) and SIPTU working in RTÉ met earlier to discuss gender and equality issues at the organisation.

At the meeting, staff agreed to call on RTÉ to publish a gender breakdown of pay grades and remuneration data within the next fortnight.

The informal meeting was called to allow staff to express their views ahead of formal engagement by the trade unions in RTÉ.

Staff also called for an independent external review to be carried out, examining gender and equality, by a panel to be agreed between the RTÉ Trade Union Group and management.

In response, RTÉ has confirmed former director-general of the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC), Kieran Mulvey, will oversee a review of gender equality at the company.

He will then make recommendations based on that review.

RTÉ says it will be finalising the terms of reference of the review "over the coming days."

Speaking after the meeting, NUJ national executive council member Emma O'Kelly said: "We are grateful to, and supportive of our colleagues who have recently spoken out in the media on these matters.

"We would welcome an atmosphere of openness and transparency in public discussion of the issues, with as little hindrance as possible."
