A four-storey block of flats has partially collapsed near the city of Naples in Italy and at least six people are feared trapped.

Firefighters are digging through rubble with their hands and passing debris out in buckets as they frantically try to save victims.

Two families are thought to be among those being searched for.

The ages of those missing are unclear, but some Italian media is reporting that two children are amoung those missing.

Parts of the building also fell on the nearby Circumvesuviana railway, which connects Naples with the Amalfi coast, and a section of the line is now closed.

The tower block is located in Torre Annunziata, a seaside town 20km south of Naples and three miles from Pompeii.

Witnesses reportedly said there was no explosion before the building collapsed, but that a freight train had passed on the railway.

Reconstruction work was being carried out on the first floor of the tower.

Sniffer dogs have been brought in to help with the rescue effort and no casualties have yet been reported.
