One doctor has died and six other people have been injured following a shooting at a hospital in New York.

The incident happened at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital.

Police Commissioner James O'Neill said the shooter - who died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound - was armed with an assault rifle.

A female doctor died, and five of the other six victims had been seriously injured. The 6th injured victim was shot in the leg.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said it was not a terrorist incident, and appeared to be workplace related.

He added there was a fire at the scene that complicated the emergency services' response.

A police spokesperson earlier said 'one shooter is deceased' at the scene.

The suspect is believed to have been a former employee of the hospital.

The force confirmed that several others were injured, while Mayor de Blasio indicated that other victims were fighting for their lives.
