Gardaí in Carlow have renewed their appeal for information after a woman was found unconscious in the town on Sunday.

The woman, aged in her 50s, was discovered on the grounds of Pollerton Castle at Pollerton Road.

Gardaí believe she was the victim of a "very serious assault".

She was taken to St Luke's Hospital in Kilkenny and is described as being in a serious condition.

The scene was preserved for a technical examination.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses, and in particular to anyone who travelled on Staplestown Road, St Patrick's Avenue or Pollerton Road between the hours of 2.00am and 5.00am Sunday morning to contact them.

In a statement this evening, they said: "Investigating Gardaí are particularly anxious to speak to a male and female couple who were walking in the area."

They are also appealing to any drivers of vehicles that may have travelled these roads between the above times and have footage from dash cams to contact them at Carlow Garda Station on 059-913-6620, the Garda Confidential Telephone Line at 1800-666-111 or any Garda station.

Superintendent Gerry Redmond from Carlow Garda Station is leading the investigation.

"A woman was found in the grounds in an unconscious state.

"It's apparent, from our investigations so far, that she was the subject of a very, very serious assault - and we're very concerned for her and her condition.

"She's currently in St Luke's Hospital in Kilkenny.

"She's in a very serious condition, and she was seriously assaulted.

"We are making a number of appeals for help and assistance from the public".
