The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance after an Irish man was attacked in the US.

The J1 student - who is originally from Cork - was assaulted in San Diego, California.

The incident happened early last Friday in the Pacific Beach area of the city.

He is said to be in a serious condition in hospital.

"We're aware of the case and are providing consular assistance", a spokesman for the department told Newstalk.com.

San Diego is one of the most popular destinations for J1 students.
