Kite flyers have been descending on Dollymount beach today to take part in the Dublin Kite Festival.

Thousands are expected at the North Bull Island site throughout the day, with both enthusiasts and amateurs being encouraged to fly their kites for all to see.

Conditions are just windy enough for the giant kites, and experts have come from all over for the event.

Professional kite flyer Andrew Beattie explained: "The challenge is always to get as much fabric in the air as possible, and it takes me all around the world.

"At the beginning of this season, which is December, I was in Dubai. I've had two trips to Kuwait, I've had two trips to China - and now I get to fly in Dublin!"

Speaking ahead of today's festival, event organiser Kathryn Byrne said: “Dublin Kite Festival is a wonderful event; the atmosphere is always upbeat and everyone is always in great spirits. Kite flying is a great family activity, suitable for all ages.

"It’s all about being outside, being active and having fun.”
