CNN has fired the comedian Kathy Griffin in the wake of her controversial anti-Trump photo shoot.

Griffin has been widely criticised for photos which showed her holding a fake 'decapitated head' of the US president.

The comedian has co-hosted CNN's New Year's coverage since 2007, but the news network says the agreement has now been 'terminated' following the 'disgusting and offensive' photo shoot.

Griffin's co-host Anderson Cooper took to Twitter to describe the stunt as "clearly disgusting and completely inappropriate".

The criticism of the pictures came from across the political lines, with Chelsea Clinton describing them as "vile and wrong".

In a video posted to Instagram, Griffin apologised for the photos.

Saying she was 'begging' for forgiveness, she said: "I went way too far. The image is too disturbing - I understand how it offends people. It wasn't funny."

She added that she would ask the photographer to take down the images.

Donald Trump himself took to Twitter earlier today to hit out at the comedian, saying his children were 'having a hard time with this'.
