Looking for a good value home printer?

Some recommendations to consider

I received a tweet from a listener named Bryan earlier this week, looking for some home-printer recommendations. Here are some of the best options on offer at the moment.

If you're looking to buy a printer for your home, it's worth considering what exactly you want it to do. There are essentially two options; the basic document printer, and the multi-tasker.

The key things to look out for when buying a printer are: what do you want to use it for and how much is the ink. There is no point in buying a cheap printer if the cartridges are going to cost you an arm and a leg. It's also important to ensure that the software is compatible with your computer, tablet or phone. This information is clearly displayed in store and online.

Document printer

This is the most basic printer and ticks boxes for the majority of those looking for a home printer. These are solid and reliable for anyone looking to print the odd document, or for those who are self-employed.

Canon PIXMA MG3050 €39.99

If you're after a printer that won't break the bank, look no further than this device.

I bought a Canon Pixma printer a few years ago and it has yet to let me down! The MG3050 can print, scan and has wireless connectivity too. Not bad going for less than €40.

Cartridges are widely available and are very affordable. It's possible to buy Canon XL cartridges to fit this printer, which Canon claim will save 30% per page on ink.

Multitasker

This type of printer can deal with some heavy-duty usage. This is recommended for those who would do more than 'a bit' of printing. This type of printer will come with scanning, Wifi and photo printing features.

HP Envy 5540 - €75.99

This printer crossed my desk this week and I have been very impressed by its capability and performance. It's a neat machine that is incredibly easy to setup. I had it connected to my laptop and phone within 10 minutes.

It's possible to print single documents, double-sided documents and photos with ease. There's a 5.5cm touchscreen on the front of the printer that makes interacting with the device very easy. Cartridges are included in the price as too is photo-editing software.
