I'm fond of a browser plug-in. Whilst I am aware of how nerdy that sentence is, there is no shame here. Simple additions to your web browser can help increase productivity and task management. Here are my five must-haves.
If you've ever typed an email under pressure or whilst multi-tasking, chances are you've encountered the typo. There's a plugin for Google Chrome and Safari that seeks to eliminate poor grammar and typos from electronic communications. Grammarly is free to install and identifies spelling mistakes, as well as suggesting corrections.
Once downloaded, Grammarly scans emails, blogs and any other form of online communication for grammar and spelling mistakes. Errors are clearly flagged and easily fixed. This is the ideal companion for anyone looking to avoid embarrassing typos.
Many productivity experts would advise against having multiple tabs open at the one time as it can be distracting. If you're looking to remove the distraction, whilst still having access to the information you need, OneTab is for you.
This extension pulls all tabs into one, easy to access webpage. Not only will this declutter the browser screen, it will also free up 95% of memory used.
You may or may not have heard about the Pomodoro Technique
. This is a time management method created by Francesco Crillo. The idea is that users work in 25-minute bursts rather than sitting aimlessly in front of a screen for hours. The Marinara plugin works on Google Chrome and is completely free.
A small tomato appears in the top left of the screen and alerts users when their 25 minutes is up.
This one is for Gmail users. Rather than leaving your email open all day, this plugin will alert you to new mail in a discreet fashion. It's less distracting than Outlook's popups and it's very easy to disable.
I used to email articles, recipes and funny videos to myself all of the time. Bookmarking didn't work for me and yet I wanted to be able to look back at things I stumbled upon at a time that suited. This is where Pocket enters the picture. This is a simple way of keeping track of interesting items online.
is another service to check out. They have an app too, which is very useful for when you're on the go. You'll find the iOS version here
and the Android version here
