Five more Tesco stores are set to join a strike at the company.

The Mandate trade union says they have voted in favour of industrial action, and will join colleagues on the picket lines on Friday February 17th.

This follows nine other stores who plan to take strike action on Valentine's Day February 14th.

The union claims Tesco is attempting to change the contracts of employment of over 250 of their longest serving workers without agreement.

It also says the retalier is imposing new contracts which include cuts to pay and conditions at work.

"Tesco have never satisfactorily justified these cuts to pay or conditions of employment and if a company of their size and magnitude get away with this, all workers in Tesco are vulnerable", the union says.

Meanwhile, Mandate says the majority of the workers facing changes to pay and conditions are earning slightly more than than €14 an hour.

John Douglas, Mandate general-secretary said: "Tesco is a hugely profitable multinational retailer making enormous profits in Ireland, buying up distribution companies for billions of euro and paying out dividends to shareholders.

"Yet they are threatening their most loyal workers into taking cuts to their incomes. These are already low-paid workers and it simply isn't fair."

While Tesco Ireland say: "It is disappointing that Mandate continues to seek to damage the company with strike action in a small number of stores on an issue which affects 250 people out of 14,500 working in Tesco.

"We still urge Mandate, even at this late stage, to accept the Labour Court's Recommendation on changes to pre-1996 terms and conditions and call off its strike.

"It is our intention that all Tesco stores will open for business as usual next week."
