Online has been the big winner...
Retail Excellence Ireland says that Christmas spending is on-course to match 2015 levels.
Figures released last week showed a drop-off in spending, but there has been a late rally.
Irish shoppers are increasingly spending more earlier and taking advantage of Black Friday deals - but local stores are expected to profit today and tomorrow as people travel home for Christmas and pick up their last bits and pieces.
Commenting on the trading Lynn Drumgoole, Communications Director with Retail Excellence said, "Consumer shopping patterns are changing with savvy consumers researching online and instore for the best prices, discounting and ease of shopping experience. The impact of Black Friday cannot be ignored but with 2 full days of trading left and many people finishing work and travelling home we should see local stores benefit as people buy those last minute gifts."
It adds that online retail was the big winner this year with some online sectors experiencing double digit growth.
"Overall it has been a challenging trading period but the late surge will see most sectors trading on a par with last year," Retail Excellence Ireland concluded.
