2016 will be remembered for many things - the famous greats we lost, the political events that occurred and a whole host of memorable sporting moments - but what were we searching for online this year? Google has unveiled the top searches for 2016.

It may or may not surprise you to learn that Euro 2016 was the top search in Ireland this year. This was followed by the runaway sensation Pokemon Go and David Bowie, who sadly passed away earlier this year.

The key news stories that had us Googling were Brexit, US Election and Ireland Election 2016.

The celebrity deaths that caused the highest number of searches were: David Bowie, Prince, Alan Rickman and Anthony Foley.

The questions many of us asked Google this year include:

  • What is Pokemon Go?
  • What is Brexit?
  • What is a hung Dail?
  • What is my Eircode?
