Singapore Airlines and Italy's flagship airline, Alitalia have become the latest to ban Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 from all flights.

The US Department of Transport has banned the devices from all air transportation “to, from, or within the United States.”

Samsung recently “permanently discontinued” the Note 7 device following complaints of exploding batteries.

The mobile giant also recalled two and a half million phones that had already been sold advising customers to keep their phones powered off.

"Consumers with either an original Galaxy Note7 or replacement Galaxy Note 7 device should power down and stop using the device and take advantage of the remedies available," the company said in a statement.

US Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said officials recognise the inconvenience the ban will cause some passengers but insisted the “safety of all those aboard an aircraft must take priority.”

“We are taking this additional step because even one fire incident in-flight poses a high risk of severe personal injury and puts many lives at risk,” he said.

Any passengers caught attempting to “evade the ban” by packing the devices into checked-in luggage may be subject to prosecution as they are “increasing the risk of a catastrophic incident.”
