This new application provides motivation to those who need it
A new app called Sweatcoin tracks user's activity and pays accordingly in its digital currency, which can then be used to purchase further exercise classes or personal trainers.
Every 1,000 steps equals one sweatcoin (SWC). The digital currency can be used to buy items from the app's store. Vivobarefoot shoes cost 250 SWC and an exercise class with Clubbercise costs 45 SWC.
The app is currently only available on iOS but the founder, Oleg Fomenko, has stated that they are currently working on an Android version. Speaking to Reuters, Fomenko said
"This whole business is pegged to making movement valuable. Eventually, sweatcoin is going to have a rate of exchange tied to the British pound."
The app is not yet available in the Irish iOS store, but is proving popular in the UK. Four London start-ups signed up to Sweatcoin as part of an employee rewards-program offering. Employees can earn extra days off, subsidised healthy meals or free massages in exchange for sweatcoins.
