International IT giant Microsoft is creating 200 new jobs in Dublin - on top of the 500 already announced in February.

The positions include Technical and Solutions Sales Specialists as well as those with language capabilities.

The company is also recruiting individuals with leadership experience to help build the organisation and support its growing sales team.

The company said 80% of the 500 positions announced when Ireland was selected as the location of the Microsoft EMEA Inside Sales organisation have already been filled.

Recruitment for the 200 newly announced posts will begin immediately.

Newstalk’s business Editor Vincent Wall has said this morning’s jobs boost comes as a bit of a surprise:

“This is in their inside sales team where they basically provide technological solutions to corporate clients,” he said.

“They only set up that body in Dublin back in February; they announced 500 jobs then.

“About half those jobs being filled from overseas because there are language skills involved.

“All the more impressive as Microsoft is actually cutting 10% of its global workforce as it moves towards more cloud-based operations.”

In a statement this morning, Microsoft said the creation of new roles reflects the rapid expansion of the organisation – adding that once the new positions are filled, it will bring the company's overall employee numbers in Ireland to 2,000.

Speaking following the announcement of the jobs, the Tánaiste and Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Frances Fitzgerald said the expansion “demonstrates the opportunities that can be created for Ireland from our existing employers and investors, and illustrates that the talent is available in Ireland for these types of jobs and for employers.”

Cathriona Hallahan, Managing Director, Microsoft Ireland said: “The continued contribution of the Dublin-based Inside Sales team to the company at a global level ensures that we are in a strong position when we seek to attract further investment to Ireland.”

“With the continued growth of our team and our preparations for a move into our beautiful new state of the art campus building, our fourth decade in Ireland is shaping up to be the best yet," she said.

The Inside Sales Centre serves customers in over 30 different languages across the world.
