Joan Burton has stated in the Dáil at Leaders' Questions today that the timeline for Irish Water was "certainly too ambitious."

The Tánaiste was answering questions on the latest issues surrounding the organisation and indicated that perhaps there may be an introduction of an extension to the flat rate charge.

She also said no bonuses should be paid at Irish Water until it "is operational".

Joan Burton's accused Fianna Fáil of not having costed their options on Irish Water at all, saying they would force a bill of €2.5bn on the taxpayer.

In a clear hint that metered charges may be delayed and replaced by a flat charge, the Tánaiste told the Dáil that getting Irish Water up and running was taking longer than planned:
