2017 will see Netflix's focus continue to shift towards developing original series - but with a new focus on unscripted shows.

Its chief content officer Ted Sarandos said that, "Unscripted television is a very interesting business" - it is often quicker and cheaper to produce than scripted drama and comedies. He added that these titles are "more likely to travel internationally."

20 new unscripted shows are in the works and include 'Ultimate Beastmaster' - which sounds like a cross between 'Wipeout' and 'Gladiators' and lists Sylvester Stallone as a producer.

House of Cards season 4 will stream during 2017

Netflix plans to invest $6bn in content next year - they aim to get to a point where 50% of all its titles are Netflix originals.

Speaking at the UBS Global Media & Communications Conference in New York, he said that the success of 'Stranger Things' was a major milestone for the company - both because of its reach and because it was its first original series developed in-house and produced wholly by Netflix.

Mr Sarandos added that it will not be falling into the "trap" of taking on many more projects like that. It is currently producing the second series of the sci-fi hit.

'House of Cards,' 'Master of None,' and, 'Wet Hot American Summer' are all set to return in 2017.

There are a number of anticipated Netflix 'TV' projects on the way, including:

  • 'Lemony Snicket’s A Series Of Unfortunate Events' - A series based on the popular children's book and staring Neal Patrick Harris of How I Met Your Mother fame is coming in January.

  • David Fincher, is working on 'Mind Hunter,' a series about the start of serial-killer profiling in the FBI.

  • 'Santa Clarita Diet' - A single camera comedy series fronted by Drew Barrymore.

The executive added that the company will continue to invest in its own films as it continues to work with Adam Sandler and it is developing 'Bright' - an action film directed by Suicide Squad's David Ayer which will star Will Smith.

However - Sarandos said that the company still has no interest in acquiring costly rights to air sporting events.
