In 1995 Ireland voted to legalise divorce. Thought to be a forgone conclusion when announced, the Fifth Amendment only pass by a slim majority thanks to the highly successful 'Hello Divorce, Goodbye Daddy' campaign. 

In the 22 years since attitudes towards divorce have changed greatly, with a new bill introduced by Fine Gael TD, Josepha Madigan, seeking to shorten the process. Yet the history of divorce in Ireland stretches beyond the push for legalisation in the late 20th century.

So what is the history of divorce? Where did it come from? How has it helped to change societies throughout time? And why is it so tied in with sexual performance?
