Tesco have recently revealed the last minute purchases made by Irish shoppers stocking up for the festive season. In the past, last minute items were once dominated by phone credit, batteries and sellotape.
Last year’s results however, revealed that shoppers appear to be concentrating on fresh daily produce and family favourites at the final hurdle of preparation for the festivities.
The list of the top ten things sold in Tesco on Christmas Eve were:
- Fresh Cream
- White Bread
- Cola soft drinks (1 and 2 litre bottles)
- Fruit flavour soft drinks (1 and 2 litre bottles)
- Bacon
- Crisps in a tube
- Lemons and Limes
- Big bag crisps and snacks
- Brussels Sprouts
Bacon makes its debut on the list this year having not featured at all in 2014. The appearance of Brussels sprouts in the number ten spot suggests a possible Christmas dinner bacon and sprout combination could be at play to help liven up the vegetable.
Friday the 23rd is anticipated to be the busiest shopping day of the year; Tesco Ireland expects to sell over 2 million sprouts across the country after reaching a whopping 6.5 million sold this week.
CEO of Tesco Ireland, Geoff Byrne said "As a nation, Christmas dinner is one of the most treasured meals of the year, and while this is usually a family filled occasion, it’s not without its stresses or last minute panics. At Tesco Ireland, we’re all about making life easier for the hosts in our lives – from last minute buys to show stopper desserts which will wow any dinner guest, we’ve got them covered."
