A European court opinion could see Irish motorway tolls rise significantly.

The European Court of Justice wants Ireland to charge 23% VAT on trips on State-owned motorways, with the M50 and Dublin Port Tunnel tolls likely to be impacted.

If the rules are implemented, an M50 toll could rise from €2.10 to €2.50 (or from €2.60 to €3.20 for a driver with a video account).

Verona Murphy from the Irish Road Haulage Association says her organisation would be very opposed to any increases.

Speaking to Newstalk Breakfast, she explained: "The recovery is not such that we can sustain what we've suffered in the recession, never mind anything that can levy us with increases in what we do.

"Every time there's an increase in something to do with transport, the consumer is ultimately the one that suffers," she added.
