The Taoiseach Enda Kenny is encouraging people to turn off the tap when washing their teeth to reduce their water charges.

Mr Kenny says there are plenty of simple measures that people can take to keep costs down when the new tax is introduced in January.

The Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) will next week announce the rates that will be charged, with the average set to be €238.

Details of a waiver scheme are also set to be unveiled.

The move would see homes with boil water notices for less than three months get a 50% discount, while a 100% discount would apply for those suffering for over three months.

However the Mr Kenny says it is possible to save and conserve huge amounts of water in many different ways.

Earlier, protests against the water meters took place in the Drimnagh and Bluebell areas of Dublin.

Hundreds of demonstrators stopped workers from installing the meters by standing on the stopcocks outside their houses.

People Before Profit Councillor Brid Smith says locals are very angry at the charges.
