Duke the nine-year-old Great Pyrenees beat his girlfriend Lassie in a landslide victory
Giving a whole new political spin to having a lead in the polls, the town of Cormorant, Minnesota, in the United States has re-elected Duke the Great Pyrenees mountain dog as mayor. Winning in a landslide victory, the nine-year-old canine will now take up his third term as the town’s leader.
“I don’t know who would run against him because he’s done such great thing for the community,” said Cormorant resident Karen Nelson.
In the vote held over the weekend, Cormorant’s electorate was required to pay $1 each in order to cast their ballot, which took place during the annual Cormorant Daze festival.
“Everybody voted for Duke, except for one vote for his girlfriend, Lassie,” said David Rick, Duke’s owner and political strategist. Rick revealed that Duke was accidentally elected mayor in 2014, when only 12 votes were cast, but has since become a political heavyweight in northern Minnesota.
As the town’s mayor, Duke has the honourable duty of appearing in three billboards on the motorway leading to Cormorant, promoting the town as the place “Where Friends Gather.”
