A special vigil is to be held in Dublin this evening for those living at the Calais 'Jungle' camp.

The Dublin Calais Refugee Solidarity Group are holding a candlelight vigil at the front of the GPO at 7pm.

The group is calling on all Irish citizens to oppose a controversial deal between the European Union and Turkey, and support new safe passages for refugees.

The €6bn aid package for Turkey would come with certain conditions attached.

Under the proposed plan, all migrants arriving in Greece from Turkey would be returned. For each Syrian sent back, a Syrian already in Turkey would be resettled in the EU.

The proposals will be discussed at a summit of EU leaders tomorrow.

Hannah Kelleher of Dublin Calais Refugee Solidarity said, "in the run up to the 1916 commemorations, Dublin Calais Refugee Solidarity calls on the Irish people to remember our own history as refugees.

"Millions of people fled from Ireland due to famine and oppression and as such, Irish people should empathise with refugees, many of whom are fleeing from war and very serious oppression," she added.
