A verdict is expected today in the trial of Irish citizen Ibrahim Halawa.

The 21-year-old has been imprisoned in Egypt for over four years.

Mr Halawa (21), from Firhouse in Dublin, was arrested during demonstrations against the ousting of president Mohammed Morsi in August 2013.

The trial process - which involves hundreds of other defendants - has been repeatedly hit by delays and adjournments, but a verdict could finally be delivered today.

Colm O'Gorman, Executive Director of Amnesty International Ireland, suggests there is no evidence to link Ibrahim to the 'serious charges' made against him.

He argued: "We very much hope that there'll be a final verdict today, and that following that verdict Ibrahim will be released - because he of course must be acquitted.

"At no stage during this now four-year process, was a single piece of evidence introduced by the prosecution [...] that in any way either named or implicated or linked Ibrahim to any of the serious charges that are being made against him."

In a statement following the most recent adjournment last month, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar contacted Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi to express 'disappointment' over the delay.

In a statement, Mr Varadkar's office said: "[The Taoiseach] made clear to President Al-Sisi that his priority was to secure the return of Ibrahim Halawa to Ireland as soon as possible".
