The fallout continues from Brendan Rodgers' departure from Liverpool yesterday evening and Liverpool based author and journalist Tony Barrett joined Joe on tonight's Off The Ball.

After the news broke yesterday that Rodgers would no longer be Liverpool manager, reports have already emerged of the clubs next managerial target. It may the system, however, and not the personnel that needs changing.

"I was doomed," said Barrett speaking on tonight's show, "That was my view from probably a year or so in.

"I think one of the problems was that if Rodgers had gone through the owners with a consistent string of top players, then the owners would say: 'Yeah, I can understand why you want to spend so much money on him".

"Instead, you have him going to the [transfer] committee and spending £25 million on Adam Lallana and £32 million on Christian Benteke."

Barrett continued to air his concern over the transfer committee as a concept in modern day football.

"Rodgers came into the job under the preface that he wouldn't work with a director of football, which was a unusual for a young manager" he explained.

"I think he would have benefited from the help, support and guidance of someone who was more experienced than him.

"They wanted to have a colligious approach when bringing players in, instead of just having one person and this caused problems.

"That problem just grew from the start, there was clashes immediately over Daniel Sturridge. The club wanted to sign Sturridge, Rodgers wanted to sign Clint Dempsey.

"Rodgers wanted to sign Joe Allen for £15 million, the committee thought that was excessive. This went on and on."
