Two people have been killed following separate accidents on our roads last night

In County Leitrim, a 74-year-old female pedestrian was killed after being hit by a car on the Carrick on Shannon road out of Drumshanbo.

The incident happened at around 7.15pm yesterday evening.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and her body has been removed to Sligo General Hospital.

The 50-year-old driver of the car was not injured.

According to Gardaí, the road has since reopened following a forensic examination.

Witnesses to the collision are being asked to contact Carrick on Shannon Garda Station on 071-965-0510, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111, or any Garda station.

Separately, a woman was also killed in Buncrana, County Donegal following a two-car collision. That crash happened just before 11pm at Glebe, Fahan.

The female driver of one of the cars - aged 25 - was fatally injured. Her body has been removed to Letterkenny University Hospital.

The second driver - a 20-year-old man - was injured and taken to the same hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

There were no passengers in either car.

The road is closed to facilitate a forensic examination, and local diversions are in place. The road is expected to remain closed for most of the day.
