The race for the White House is going down to the wire according to a new CNN "poll of polls" released on Thursday.

Hillary Clinton currently has a lead of 43% to 41% of likely voters over Republican rival Donald Trump. Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson took 9% with Green party candidate Jill Stein sitting on 3%.

Worryingly for Clinton, Trump leads in two of the key battleground states of Ohio and Florida. Both states carry big electoral college votes which could decide the November election - Ohio having 18 votes up for grabs and Florida carrying 29.

The importance of winning Ohio is now enshrined in US political folklore giving birth to the phrase: "As goes Ohio, so goes the nation." Indeed, no Republican has ever been elected to the White House without winning Ohio.

In Ohio, Trump holds a 46% to 41% lead over Clinton and he has a 47% to 44% advantage in Florida - although the poll's margin for error is 3.5%.

Americans go to the ballot boxes on November 8th.
