A huge search is underway for a British diving instructor and his girlfriend who have disappeared off the coast of Mexico following a hurricane.

Paul Whitehouse from Wolverhampton and Simone Wood, who is thought to be from London, were reported missing yesterday.

The pair had reportedly been on a yacht in the Gulf of California. Mr Whitehouse is believed to be a scuba instructor living in the city of La Paz.

Mexican marines and sailors are taking part in a search operation.

A spokeswoman for the UK Foreign Office said: "We are in touch with the local authorities and are providing consular assistance to the families at this difficult time."

18-thousand tourists have been evacuated in the past two days.

The British Embassy in Mexico has advised UK nationals in Baja California and Baja California Sur, the areas affected by the hurricane, to leave through Los Cabos International Airport.

18,000 tourists have been evacuated in the past two days.
