A 25-year-old green turtle in Thailand who had more than 900 coins taken out of her stomach has died.

The reptile - named Omsin, which means 'piggy bank' in Thai - had eaten the cash thrown into her pool in Thailand's Chonburi province. People had thrown the change into the water wishing for 'good luck'.

When rescued by Thai navy personnel, Omsin was was carrying 915 coins - weighing almost 5kg.

The metal had led to the underside of her shell cracking.

Earlier this month, Omsin had an operation to remove the coins.

Although the turtle initially appeared to be recovering well, a check-up over the weekend revealed intestinal problems.

Associated Press reports that doctors performed a second operation on Omsin, but she never woke up.

According to BBC, the turtle had developed blood poisoning, which was cited as the cause of death.

Dr Nantarika Chansue of Bangkok's Chulalongkorn University, quoted by AP, said: "[Omsin] at least had the chance to swim freely and eat happily before she passed."
