Today will start cold with frost and fog clearing as southerly winds freshen.
A dry, bright morning in midland and eastern areas, but rain in the west will become persistent and heavy and extend eastwards during the afternoon.
Afternoon temperatures 5 to 8 degrees generally, but 9 or 10 degrees along Atlantic coasts.
This evening rain will gradually clear the east and tonight will become mostly dry for a time.
Fresh southerly winds will veer westerly with the clearance and ease.
Lowest temperatures will fall to between 1 and 6 degrees with a slight frost for a time.
Southwesterly winds will freshen later as showery rain in the west pushes eastwards towards morning.
