Donald Trump has claimed he will pull the US out of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) if it doesn’t treat the US better.

In an interview with Bloomberg, President Trump threatened to withdraw if the organisation doesn't "shape up".

He also claimed the agreement establishing the body is the "single worst trade deal ever made”.

The WTO, which was established in 1994, was set up to help deal with trade rules between different countries.

As well as helping nations negotiate trade deals, it also supports developing countries and works to settle disputes between member states.

In his interview, President Trump did acknowledge that the US had won lawsuits at the international trade organisation recently.

He argued: “In the last year, we’re starting to win a lot.

“You know why? Because they know if we don’t, I’m out of there.”

Only this week, it was reported that the US had launched a complaint against Russia at the WTO, after Moscow introduced extra duties on some US goods in response to the Trump administration's controversial tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

The European Commission, meanwhile, has said it will take a dispute settlement case at the WTO against the US tariffs.

China is also challenging the US amid the escalating trade war between the two countries.
