The US President is expected to discuss Russia with the German leader
US President Donald Trump is expected to take a phone call from German Chancellor Angela Merkel just hours before he speaks to Russian President Vladimir Putin for the first time.
These talks could be tricky to manage - Mr Trump has publicly stated his opposition to sanctions imposed on Russia due to its intervention in the current conflict in Ukraine.
According to Reuters he will speak to both of them on Saturday.
The US president has spoken about his desire to establish a positive relationship with Russia, as the two share common enemies in Syria and the so-called Islamic State. This effort could include a rolling back of Russian sanctions.
The reports suggest that there could be conflict if Trump looks for concessions to Russia which Germany will not back.
"I don’t know Putin, but if we can get along with Russia that’s a great thing, it’s good for Russia, it’s good for us, we go out together and knock the hell out of ISIS, because that’s a real sickness," he previously said.
He angered some German politicians when he told The Times that the EU has become essentially a "vehicle" for Germany.
Mr Trump will greet his first international visitor today as he holds talks with British PM, Theresa May.
