Trump nominates Chris Wray as new FBI director

President Donald Trump has announced he will be nominating Chris Wray for the vacant FBI director position.

Taking to Twitter, Trump said, "I will be nominating Christopher A. Wray, a man of impeccable credentials, to be the new Director of the FBI. Details to follow."

Wray, 50,  previously served as assistant attorney general from 2003 to 2005. He worked under former FBI director James Comey at the Justice Department for two years, when Comey was the deputy attorney general.

The position has been open since Trump decided to fire Comey on May 9th. The administration had indicated a successor would be picked prior to the president leaving on an international tour, but the process was delayed.

Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe assumed the role of acting director upon Comey’s dismissal, and was also believed to be in the running for the position.

  • Wray graduated from Yale Law School and clerked for Appeals Court Judge Michael Luttig

  • He has been a litigation partner at the King & Spalding law firm, working out of its Atlanta and Washington D.C. offices, since he left the Justice Department in 2005, according to the firm’s website
  • He was Chris Christie’s personal attorney during the Bridgegate Investigation
