A trial has heard that posters claiming a State solicitor helped her son’s friend get off a drugs charge were circulated around her estate.

Eve Doherty, a Dublin based Garda, is accused of harassing her boyfriend’s ex-wife in the eighteen months leading up to mid-March 2013.

In March 2012, a resident of the estate in Blackrock, Co. Dublin where Elizabeth Howlin lived found some posters containing allegations in relation to her position at the DPP’s office – specifically that she had used her influence as a State solicitor to protect a local drug dealer.

Pat Martin, a neighbour of Ms Howlin’s, said the poster referred to his family.

He said their son was prosecuted after Gardaí found some cannabis in his room in December 2011 – but he insisted they were not drug dealers.

Defence barrister Michael O’Higgins pointed out the case was actually struck out and asked Mr Martin’s wife Patricia why she called Ms Howlin after the Garda search of their home.

She said she just asked her to recommend a solicitor.

Eve Doherty is accused of making false statements against Ms Howlin and of engaging in a campaign of harassment against her.
