The people of Nice have made the unusual move of creating an anti-tribute to the attacker who killed 84 men, women, and children on the Promenade des Anglais on July 14th. Beside the floral and candle tributes to Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel’s victims, locals are piling rubbish and stones on the spot where police shot dead the terrorist.

Reports claim that passers-by take a moment to spit on the rubbish pile to express their disgust with his actions, throwing cigarette butts and plastic bottles on top of it. The word lâche, the French for ‘coward’, has been written beside the pile.

The rubbish can be found just metres from the memorial that has popped up in honour of the victims. The attack, the third to strike France in 18 months, saw Bouhlel drive a large lorry indiscriminately into crowds gathered to watch fireworks on the iconic seafront. Ten children were among the dead.

Other messages scrawled in the ground beside the anti-tribute include an image of a hand giving the middle finger and the words “F*** Daesh,” the Arabic word used pejoratively to described the so-called Islamic State terrorist group.

ISIS claimed credit for the Saturday attack, claiming that their “soldier” had answered the “calls to target nations of coalition states that are fighting [IS].”

France’s Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said that after investigators spoke to scores of the attacker’s relatives and acquaintances, the conclusion drawn has been that he was someone who “seemed to have been radicalised very quickly.”
