The Irish summer hasn't been as great as it was in recent years, but spare a thought for those in the town of Bandar Mahshahr in Iran, where it's so hot that they're coming close to setting a world record.

The heat index or "feels like" temperature hit an incredible 74°C (165°F) yesterday, which is only a few degrees short of the ridiculous record of 81°C, set in Saudi Arabia in 2003. As a comparison, the hottest temperature ever recorded in Ireland, was 33.3°C, so 74°C seems almost incomprehensible.

In neighbouring Iraq, temperatures have also been climbing and hit 52°C this week, prompting authorities to declare a four day holiday and urge people to stay indoors wherever possible. The cause of the heatwave is a pattern of high pressure which is known as a "heat dome" and has been sitting over the region for much of July.

Speaking to The Daily Mail Anthony Sagliani of AccuWeather said that the unbelievable heat was "one of the most incredible temperature observations I have ever seen and it is one of the most extreme readings ever in the world".
