A new survey to mark the start of World Book Week shows that more than a third of us read less than we did five years ago.

Another third admit they do not read often, and less than half of parents (49%) read to their children each day.

But the stats, which were compiled by St Michael's House, also show that 84% of adults think reading with their children can be both a bonding and an educational experience.

Barbara Wiseman is spokesperson for St Michael's which cares for people with intellectual disabilities.

She is hoping their latest fundraising efforts - their annual 'Bring a Book, Buy a Book' campaign - might encourage families to start reading together:

World Book Day takes place on Thursday March 5th, with the organisers saying "the main aim is to encourage children to explore the pleasure of books and reading by providing them with an opportunity to have a book of their own. This may sound like a very simple idea, but unfortunately, many children do not have access to books in their homes."
