Liverpool have managed to salvage a draw with Arsenal after a Martin Skrtel equaliser in the seventh minute of added time.

Philippe Coutinho put Liverpool in front with a minute to go to half time. Just a minute later, Mathieu Debuchy equalised for the Gunners.

In the second half, Olivier Giroud put Arsenal in front with his fifth league goal of the season. Santi Cazorla got down the left and crossed low for Giroud who diverted the ball between the legs of Jones and into the back of the net.

It looked like that would be the goal to decide the match, and the Reds had substitute Fabio Borini sent off after falling 2-1 behind.

However Liverpool's ten-man team kept the pressure up and late into almost ten minutes of injury time a header from Skrtel secured a last minute draw.

Earlier in the day, Sunderland won the Premier League's first north east derby of the season with a 90th minute goal.

Adam Johnson netted in the 1-0 victory over Newcastle at St James' Park.

Tomorrow, joint table-toppers Chelsea will be determined to pull ahead of Manchester City when they face off against Stoke City. That match kicks off at 8pm, and marks the start of a busy Christmas week in the Premier League.

Final scores

Sunderland 1-0 Newcastle

(S: Johnson 90')

Liverpool 2-2 Arsenal

(L: Coutinho 45', Skrtel 90'+6'; A: Debuchy 45'+1', Giroud 64')
