After already receiving a critical panning, the makers of the Warner Bros. superhero film Suicide Squad are facing fresh controversy over claims they digitally altered the appearance of Cara Delevingne.
A new video by FilmIsNow Movie Bloopers & Extras highlights the visual effects work done on the David Ayer film by Imageworks. The video shows how the effects company digitally slimmed down the catwalk model turned actress’s waist to make her appear thinner.
In the film, which made €745m at the global box office, Delevingne plays June Moone, an archaeologist who becomes possessed by an evil spirit known as Enchantress. The all-star cast also features Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, and Viola Davis.
The video above would suggest that Imageworks shaved pounds off Delevingne’s waist, though the effects company hasn’t hidden the fact – the new video is an extended version of one posted on the Imageworks YouTube channel in March.
Suicide Squad is not the first Warner Bros. film to be criticised for unnecessary retouching to its female characters; in March, upon the release of the new Wonder Woman trailer, the film studio was criticised for Photoshopping the armpits of Israeli actress Gal Godot, removing even the hint of stubble lest the audience be put off.
Suicide Squad underwent several reshoots after the success of Marvel’s Deadpool, though the theatrical cut of the DC comics film was coolly met by audiences and critics alike. Buoyed by the film’s financial success at the box office, a sequel is believed to be in the works, along with a spin-off franchise starring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.
