Remains found at a house in Co Louth are not those of missing teenager Ciara Breen.
The 17-year-old disappeared in February 1997.
Speculation had begun after skeletal remains were found at a house in Dundalk on Wednesday, a short distance from where she was last seen.
Construction workers made the discovery shortly before 5.00pm when they were working at a site on Mary Street North.
A forensic anthropologist confirmed that the remains found in the back garden of the house were human.
However gardaí say the remains are historical and the National Museum of Ireland has been notified.
Superintendent Gerry Curley gave an update after an examination by the State Pathologist.
"We're satisfied that the remains are not modern, they're historical.
"We've contacted the National Museum and we await instructions from the museum as to what direction we'll take in relation to the matter.
"But we're not looking at a modern skeletal remains".
