Doctors say a second and conclusive test shows a Spanish nurse infected with Ebola is completely clear of the virus.

Teresa Romero was admitted to a Madrid hospital earlier this month.

It had been reported at the weekend that she had made a full recovery, but doctors have now said they believe all the World Health Organisation's criteria to declare the patient clear of infection have been met.

She was the first known person to contract the disease outside of West Africa in the latest outbreak, which has killed more than 4,500 people in Africa.

The nurse had cared for two infected priests repatriated from West Africa who later died.

Doctor Jose Ramon Arribas of the Carlos III hospital in Madrid said "all the four consecutive days' results are negative, so the team that is taking care of the patient thinks that today we meet the WHO criteria to declare clear of infection".

Earlier, Foreign Affairs Minister Charlie Flanagan outlined some of the steps the EU is taking to tackle the Ebola virus, saying there is a "very ambitious programme" to ensure medical aid is available for countries affected by the current outbreak.
