In a statement to the Associated Press, his representative, Brian Bumbery, said Cornell died on Wednesday night in Detroit.

Bumbery called the death "sudden and unexpected" and said his wife and family were shocked.

The statement said the family would be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause and asked for privacy.

Cornell was born on July 20th, 1964 in Seattle, Washington to Ed Boyle (from an Irish Catholic background) and Karen Cornell.

He formed Soungarden in 1984 with bassit Hiro Yamamoto and guitarist Kim Thayil. They would go on to record six albums together and were expected to release a new album later this year.

Some of the biggest names in rock have paid tribute to Chris Cornell including Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page, Elton John, Aerosmith's Joe Perry and Dave Navarro formerly of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Elton John said on Twitter "Shocked and saddened by the sudden death of @chriscornell. A great singer, songwriter and the loveliest man."
