Sixteen people are reported to have died after a bus carrying school children crashed in Italy, police have confirmed.

The vehicle was carrying teenage students from Hungary and was returning to Budapest from France when it crashed into barriers and burst into flames.

Police say 16 badly burned bodies were pulled from the wreckage - but 39 people survived the accident, which happened near Verona just before midnight.

The foreign ministry in Budapest said that official information showed there were 54 passengers, including adults accompanying the students, who were aged between 15 and 17, and two drivers.

Ten people are understood to be seriously ill in hospital and emergency services fear the number of people killed in the accident could rise.
