A number of TDs have returned a pay increase given to them on April 1st.

The salary hike sees TDs receive an extra €2,700 a year.

A Sinn Féin motion to stop the pay rise was defeated in the Dáil back in November last year.

A counter-motion by the Government and Fianna Fáil passed by 89 votes to 38.

The counter-motion included a commitment for ministers to waive their own pay increases - but that TDs' pay would remain linked to principal officers in the civil service, as per the Lansdowne Road Agreement.

It will ultimately see TDs pay restored to the pre-crash level of €92,672 a year.

However some TDs already said they have waived the increase.

Sinn Féin deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald said: "We can't accept pay rise while government policy impoverishes others" - tweeting an image of her Declaration of Gift form, returning the money.

The office of Social Democrats TD Róisín Shortall also confirmed to Newstalk.com she had gifted back the pay rise.

While Fine Gael TD Noel Rock said: "I just returned it to the Department (of Finance).

"I just feel as though its not the right time - we're telling people in the public sector that they can't have pay increases".

While in a statement, The Green Party said: "The Green Party do not believe politicians should set their own rates of pay, as has been the case in the past.

"Rates of pay should be set in accordance with the independent assessment as recommended, and tied to the civil service rates.

"!As such, the Green Party will be accepting the recommended rates of pay."

A number of other TDs and parties were contacted, but had not replied at time of publication.

What do you think? Do TDs deserve a pay rise?
