Even at a time when Twin Peaks fever has the television-watching Lynch mob at fever pitch, a trailer for Game of Thrones can still remind us that HBO has plenty of tricks up its sleeve.

Given that the fantasy drama has now overtaken author George RR Martin’s narrative pace, fans of the books and the TV show are on the same page, with suspense hanging over each and every scene.

With the release of the full trailer for the show’s forthcoming seventh season, we’ve finally gotten a clearer picture of the course the show will take in its penultimate season.

But a word of warning: expect plenty of red herrings along the way, as the show has always revelled – with the exception of Jon Snow’s Lazarus moment – in keeping us all guessing and blindsiding our expectations.

Here are the seven biggest takeaways from the trailer below...

The Lannisters pay their debts, but their debtors are on the way

Cersei’s masterful manipulation of the religious extremists that sought to destroy her has now seen her assume the Iron Throne. But heavy is the head that wears the crown, and with all three of her children now dead, she has no heirs.

Worse still, enemies now approach her from all cardinal points, meaning the queen in King’s Landing might have to play dirty again.

Is Tyrion a Lannister anymore?

Cersei and Jaime’s unorthodox sibling relationship – arguably one of the sweetest romance’s in a show where love is just pretty strange in general – sees the new queen telling her brother they’re the only Lannisters left. “The last ones who count,” she says.

Of course, their brother Tyrion is still alive, though his allegiance has shifted dramatically as he advises Daenerys on her path to reclaiming the Seven Kingdoms.

The Granite Throne

It goes without saying that when it comes to claiming the Iron Throne, surely the power players left in the game must want to do so only in a metaphorical sense? As chairs go, a bunch of swords welded together looks quite uncomfortable.

But while Khaleesi has her sights set on it, in the meantime she’s now waiting around for somewhere to rest her weary bones. The trailer showcases a new throne, which doesn’t look that much more comfortable – a few throw pillows wouldn’t go amiss – but which demonstrates that Daenerys means business.

Arya having a laugh?

No characters on Game of Thrones has had more of a character arc than Arya Stark; from tomboy moppet to blinded day spa assassin in Braavos, Arya is a constant reminder that itemised to-do lists are an essential part of any gal’s life.

When we last saw her – crossing a name off her list – Arya was finally making her way back to her family to join up with the remaining Stark children. It’s fair to assume that journey won’t go without hurdles.

Grey Worm is about to get Sullied

As the Commander of the Unsullied, Daenerys’s army of freed slaves, Grey Worm’s flirtation with Missandei has been arguably the most wholesome romance in the show. And from the looks of the trailer, something physical is about to take place between them.

But given that Grey Worm is a eunuch, some creative thinking might be required.

50 Shades of Greyscale

When last we saw Ser Jorah, former Lannister spy turned Khaleesi’s greatest champion, he’d just come down with an unfortunate case of Greyscale. The Westerosi condition, which sees skin calcify, would appear to have spread across this arm, and not a tub of Sudocrem in sight.

The scale and scales of the action look immense

Game of Thrones continues to push the limits of what viewers can expect to see on the small screen. Admittedly, the show has the budget of many movies, but the quality of the CGI and the battle scenes glimpsed in the trailer shows that HBO is not holding back.

And it looks like the dragons will be playing a major role as well. We'll just have to wait until July 16th to find out.
